Reading is vital to enhance your child's learning and ability in all National Curriculum areas.

Alexandra:
We try to ensure your child comes home with a reading book from school and a reading record.

* Ask your child to show you the book and record

* Try to hear them read at least once in the time the book is at home

* If they get stuck, ask them to sound out the word a letter at a time. Ask them if they see any smaller words in the word they are stuck on. Look for clues in the picture (if the book has pictures) Then finally read the word for them.

* Ask them questions about the book: What were the characters names? What happened to that character? How would you feel if that happened to you? What was your favourite part and why? What new words have you learnt in the book?

*These questions check your child's understanding of the what they have read. Don't be surprised if they read the book fine but cannot tell you what happened. If this happens work on asking the questions above.

*Finally make a note in the record to show you've read with your child, and add a comment.

*Please return the book and record to school on the day your child's teacher has stated

Reading in general

When you're out and about with your child read signs and labels together.

In the supermarket read prices together and information on the foods

Read letters from school together, the newspaper, magazines.

If you want help in supporting your child reading, please contact school and we would be more than happy to assist you.
